Marc Davis - Disney’s Chanticleer
Out of all the Nine Old Men, I’ve always found Marc Davis’ work inspiring in terms of character development and draftsmanship as you can clearly see in these character drawings for the “unwanted” Chanticleer project. From what I’ve read, Marc and Disney Story man, Ken Anderson were truly in love with the project and were hoping for it to see the light of day. Sadly, neither Walt or Woolie Reitherman, Head of Animation Production at the time, were very gung-ho on the idea. So even though Marc and Ken worked tirelessly on the over-all presentation, the project was scrapped. Which to me, is a real shame. Because you can tell that Marc put his heart and soul into these characters, almost to the point where you forget that they are “just drawings”.
